Hey being a game based on martial arts i was wondering how may of you train and what styles. I started at 14 in Tea-Kwon-do for 4 years then went on th Kyu-Kusin karate for 3 years then Muyi-Tia for a year ive now sort of floated from style to style for a few months at a time looking for a new one that ill get more enjoyment out off.
[edit - "Martail" -> "Martial" in title]

I've done TKD off and on for a year. I have a hard time with devoting the time since I travel a lot between school and home. I do have informal training with a friend. We have some books on Kung Fu and some Judo videos. Informal, undisciplined, but fun none the less.
I also fence (yes, fencing is a martial art). I fight foil mostly.
NinjaLord does martial arts too. I'll direct him to the thread to see what he has to say.

My dad was a black belt in karate and has been teaching me since I was about 12. He taught me what would work in a fight and not waste time by practasing Kata or open hand strikes such as a chop. I later joined a karate club (hyo-gendo) and 14 was picked out of 600 for competition fights and I was one of them! Recently I have done a bit of kickboxing but I am joining the army soon so after army training and combat I am gonna be ONE BIG, HARD BASTARD! lol, thanx for reading.

Kuma and I both trained in Togakure ryu, Ninjutsu. (Mostly a mix of Tai-jutsu, aikido and Ju-jutsu). As well we train informally in any and all styles of combat.

togakure. anyone who wants to learn the basic combat of ninja, study ju-jitsu. Depending on the style of ninjutsu you want to practice there are endless variations, but ju-jitsu seems to be the core of all the ninja-combat ive learned, and i guess a bit of aikido and karate. And dirty fighting, ninja fought very very dirty... eyes balls rip off an ear...etc. and 1 major key of ninja combat ive found, bend things in the opposite direction, elbow moves one direction, BAM force it the other direction, grab finger-SNAP, twist it backwards... all joints break them, if someone grabs you, there hand belongs to you now, grab it and break it...if the persist work your way up, break the elbow, still fighting, dislocate shoulder, still fighting, choke him out our snap his neck... our sensai was brutal. favorite strike- shuto- you pull all your fingers together (extended) creating the Knife Edge with your hand, almost cupping, you strike the chin with your palm and continue the motion past your targets ear, then pull back quickly grabbing on to the targets ear, according to our sensai it only takes 17 lbs of pressure to rip off a human ear, which i guess means it is pretty easy to rip off someones ear. That was the first thing I ever learned about ninjutsu, i was hooked.

My martial arts training can be summed up like this:
The most accessable vital spots available to you are, in order: Throat, nose, eyes. And somewhere in that list if they're male: Testicles.
So I figure, if I ever need to, I'll go straight for the throat, punch 'em in the throat, maybe a jab to the nose, kick 'em in the testicles, until they curl up in pain, and then run like hell.
And yeah, no real training needed for that, eh? Just life experiences of finding out, over time, which places really hurt when you get hit in 'em.

if your going to fight like that, use the heel of your hand to go for the nose, increased breakage straight away, elbows are good too, aslong as the b*stard goes down before you....
Mau thai (sp?) or thai boxing, now thats a martial art to make someone down and out, anyone seen the film Ang BoK? awesome
i prefer movement to fighting, any one try pk? not really a martial art, but an 'art'

i learned a little wing chun, it was cool...took a few months of karate, it was lame
i actually liked yoga better, even though that's not marial..i like girls better than fighting
but out of curiousity, and no offense to the cliche of people sitting around on message boards, but who's actually been in a real fight?
i grew up in a poor neighborhood, so i was in a handful up until i moved at about 15 ... they got pretty rough, even for people that knew they couldn't be prosecuted criminally as adults
i never had a use for martial arts, i just basically figured out the hard way that the first move is usually the defining one (so make it yours and do it right)... martial arts are only terribly useful if you're fighting someone else who is trained in martial arts, and you both want to put on a show
come on, if you know how to disarm, then the next move is you destroying your attacker...where's the fight? you land three hits on him while he's trying to recover from you breaking his wrist, and that's the end of it.../shrug
err, and i fenced off and on for about 6 yrs ... mostly foil, some sabre, and sometimes against 10 year olds ( hehehehe ;D )

I have not had to use my ninjutsu since learning it thank god. And I pray I never do. The first key to any martial art is to end the fight before it happens. when it is unavoidable then you fight. I was in my share of scraps as a kid and had the shit kicked out of me once...(in my defence the fight got stopped before i could get any good face shots in, but i know I worked the guys ribs good.guy gave me 2 black eyes) Now that wouldnt happen.
our boy torinaga has found use on several occasions for his ninjusu, and ended fights quickly with minimal effort and damage to the opponent.
Jai, Torinaga, and myself frequently spar, and yes most martial arts cater to other martial artist, I have always thought the kickboxing/jujitsu combination was the most effective in rounding out a fighters abilities.
Most fighters are either close in grappling or distance strikers.
the only way training is effective is if you practice.
when it gets right down to it though you never know whats gonna go down in a street fight.
sorry bout the essay

incedently a few weeks back tori, jai, myself and lanchez were training in the woods by our old neighborhood. Earlier in the day I hit tori in tha face with nunchucks accidentally. later he cracked my head open with one of our training swords. We both learned a bit about our pain tolerance, and getting hit out of nowhere. tori recovered quickly from the chucks, I was dazed for about 5 seconds before i could even possibly continue fighting, then the blood started gushing. anything can happen in a fight, the key is how quickly you can recover and continue fighting. k sorry again.

PossE sparring update!!! Torinaga out with Broken Ribs!!! Whilst in a sparring match with Murmkuma Torinaga suffers 2 broken ribs due to Jai's interference. Torinaga struggling to get out of a sideways choke was crushed under the weight of both Murmkuma and then Jai as the interloper jumped on Murmkuma's back. The fight ended immediatly- a draw. The combination of the hold, position wieght and impact left Torinaga with two broken ribs. Torinaga has now been sidelined for at least a month.

The only martial arts I have and will take a corse on is Kickboxing, but that is your own choice on wether it is a martial art or not. Other than that I just enjoy swinging around a bamboo stick mooching off of other people's classes. I have never taken into classes for staff work, but mostly work off other people.
My mother tried to drag me into Yoga a while ago, she was scorning me on how I loved to twirl a piece of bamboo around, but when she took the yoga class herself she changed her mind and let me be, that is until she decided I should take up dancing.
There was a couple of times were knowing staff work helped. I couldn't use kickboxing because I wasn't allowed to use it out of class at that time or I would be suspended. There was no staff at hand so I just kinda used a broom laying in the ally. It snapped in half after the first blow, but I saved someone from loosing some money. Then of corse I got in a bucket of trouble for 'Contorting Harm on a fellow Human' I got off with just a scolding, they couldn't do much harm to a teenager and the thug wasn't holding any charges. I just pled the fifth the whole time, they couldn't say anything about that! Ha!

Don't know about martial arts, but when I'm angry I can hold someone twice my size a foot off the ground by the neck with one hand. I know this because some guy got a little to fresh with me, and well... let's just say that I let go a minute or so after he lost consciousness... For some reason, guys in that bar don't hit on me anymore... even when they are really drunk. Also I'm fairly good at kendo... better than my fellow students in the area anyway (Ishi-sensei can put me on the ground in three seconds no matter how good I'm doing).

;D Torinaga Update!!!!- for those who care. Tori was over at my neew house the other night while i was fixing his cpu, we went out for a bite and while walking through a field we broke into a spar. Though it was lite and fast and Tori tapped, he is well on the road to full recovery and is expected to take part in the first season Ottawars ( a game system I have devised to keep track of PossE sparring records. We fight for territories in the east end of our city). Anyone interested in this game ask me for details..... Once a few battles have taken place i will post the results on my site.
