Two things: 1st, I mistakenly tied the gray ninja features to the brand new account management infrastructure as the next release. We're only a few steps away from finishing the account management infrastructure but...., the 2nd thing.
The 2nd this is that Tchalvak moved, he got a new job, and his kid is getting older and demanding more time. I, on the other hand, have had my work load at work increase nearly 4 fold in the last month, and at the same time I'm trying to start 2 new business ventures. There just hasn't been the necessary time to get the last pieces of the puzzle in place.
It'll happen, it's not a pipe dream. We just need a few days of free time to show up.

I'd say it's more that these recent changes are pretty big so they require a lot of testing. We've been working on features all along (apart from a slowdown in the past week or two), it's just that they haven't been ready to release. I know that I've been introducing bugs in the new account system and squashin' 'em for a bit already. (we really should be using a testing framework, but ah well) I'm sure you guys will like 'em when they do pop out. (well, you probably won't care about the accounts change until it allows for multiple characters per account, but the new class will be something to have fun with, certainly.)

i like the overall idea of the new class and the herbalism skill. but one thing stood out to me in one of Beagle's posts he said something about an Oni having a rare herb and rarely samurai and guards would carry them too. does that mean you plan to put an Oni npc like the samurai in later down on the road that we can attack and kill to get the herb? the chance to get the herb could be greater if you kill the Oni than say the samurai or guard but it would be really hard to kill. just something that ran through my mind.

The oni is very hard to kill, but also hard to find. They are hidden among all the townfolk and you don't realize your attacking an Oni until it's already too late. If you manage to defeat one, you often find items of power left behind.

Tchalvak has been working on making some changes to the whole concept of the ninja.
And no, we won't be implementing a new ninja class for some time. The players that voted for the next feature chose a new class, so we created it. Now we're going back to doing what we think is best for the game. Look for the next feature poll in a few months and then you can vote for what we code.
