I tried all sorts of things before I got hooked on anime. The problem with American animation is that it is unbelievably obvious that the writers and animators don't take their jobs seriously, and that leaves me mildly irritated and feeling like I wasted my time even watching it. I watched half the first season of Avatar because a friend recommended it, but I despise the somewhat simplistic plot and the way they've drawn out a series that should by all rights have lasted only a season. Several of those series I mentioned I've stopped watching because I didn't like them much, like Prism Ark, Jyuushin Enbu, and Kaiji. I mentioned that I didn't like them and I mentioned both the basic good and bad points of each of the anime. I had no intention from the beginning of turning those into a real review, mostly because it would have been a waste of time on such a small-traffic forum. Well, in Kaiji's case I wouldn't have even mentioned it except for the sake of completion. You are exaggerating when it comes to the cookie-cutter character thing, it is more like sixty different character models re-used rather than one for each sex as you basically said. There are certain character models that pop up more often than others, but that is generally what is called 'fan-service' or the preference of the manga-ka who is generally these days an otaku as well.
Also... what can you expect? Real creativity is rarer than diamonds these days no matter where you go. You'll find that most American TV is a concept stolen from somewhere else and polished slightly to give it an 'American' slant. Most movies are just repeats of old ones that have been re-written just enough that your average idiot won't notice. The last movie with something resembling creativity in it that I saw was the Matrix. Avatar resembles a cheap knock-off of several anime I've seen that was in addition dumbed-down for child consumption. If I have no choice but to settle for something cookie-cutter, I'd rather settle for something I find pleasing to the eyes... which I have never found American animation to be.
I also read just about every book I come across and write as well. I am proud to say that my personal library extends to over ten thousand books in various genres and subjects. I am an rpg addict but I do play other games when I get the opportunity. I study philosophy, sociology, ancient history, foreign languages and mythology for the sake of my personal curiosity. I generally avoid talking about non-facile things like this here because in my experience intelligent conversation is a rarity on a forum like this.
I absolutely despise people like you who think otakus only have single interest... I'm a living library of anime knowledge because I've been a fan for fifteen years... and you can keep up with the anime season through the simple action of downloading it and dedicating four hours a week to watching it.
Modification: Well, more like six or seven hours a week, but that still is only an hour a day... doesn't even eat into the other things I do.

anime is the same as american cartoons or american anime, they just keep repeating the same old crap, which is very blah while watching, its like your (not as in YOU, just in general lol) forcing yourself to watch it just to say i've seen it kind of thing. i happen to like the airbender the story is pretty well written, and it doesnt have a bunch of pokemon jumping in every second, and it also doesnt have dragonball dragged on for 10 episodes battles or training. Their are alot of animes which are way worse, even if it is a cheap knock off...its better then whatever its copying lol or are you just one of those anime fans who no matter what will just despise everything in the anime style that does not come out of japan?

Not necessarily. Though I used to be a little bit like that, hating American animation on principle and because the comparison of styles at the time was so obviously in the favor of the Japanese. And by the way, animes like Pokemon, Naruto, and Dragonball are not necessarily representative of the whole of anime. Well, Naruto's style has gotten to be big (even though a lot of the basic concepts were stolen outright from Hunter X Hunter), but the goofy styles of Pokemon and Dragonball don't occur as often as they used to, and have been cast aside for a more 'realistic' (not my word for it) style. Dragonball is just outright unbelievable with too many obvious efforts to extend the story to make more money, and Pokemon is just downright stupid (though since Pokemon is one of those rare animes that was originally intended for kids, I suppose it can be forgiven).
When I first started anime, I was a 'swords and sorcery' psycho with no interest in anything else. As I watched I branched out and now I've at least taken a look at series that are representative of the various genres (Naruto would be classified in the same genre as Dragonball by the way... fantasy action).
I don't watch anime just to say 'I've seen it.' If that were so, I would never have taken the time to watch a magical girl anime, as it is freaking embarrassing to admit I ever watched it (and still do occasionally).
Personally I think that anime fans can be seperated into three types.
The dabblers - People who watch what is on TV because everyone seems to be watching it, and who have no real interest in it... those who are 'forcing themselves to watch it' as you put it.
The focused interest fans- These people latch onto a single genre and focus on it pretty much to the exclusion of all else - and probably out of a rudimentary sense of self-preservation. These people are the ones you see blathering about how great Dragonball Z and don't even bother to look at the rest. (Every real anime fan starts out this way... lol)
The otakus/addicts- These people are obvious, but they fall into two categories.
Focused otakus- these are the ones you see chatting obsessively about Gundam or magical girls while shouting down anyone who tries to talk about something else. These are also the ones you see buying figurines and models like crazy, and limited edition crap for the bragging rights.
Generalized otakus- This is my group. These have fallen in love with anime in general and tend to be the ones you see pushing for sequels of odd series that no one has ever heard about. Most of this type don't buy any of the extras, but rather focus on the anime itself, purchasing or downloading only for the meat of the series. Tendencies vary between individuals, but most tend to pick up anime at random, watch it, then mercilessly review it in their minds like a gourmet does his food at a restaurant. That doesn't necessarily mean they will honestly review it for others, it merely means that they will honestly review it in their own minds. In my case, I'm pretty outspoken about how I feel about any given anime. I don't hate or love an anime based on whether someone else likes it... hell if I were like that I would still be watching the interminable endless battles of Naruto Shippuden.
Do you want to hear my honest opinion of American animation? It is not nearly as good looking as Japanese. However, as a loyal fan of Scooby Doo, I have to say that I don't hate American animation in general... just all the crap I've seen on TV recently. I honestly think that American animation has just gone all to hell, not that it really just 'sucks'. I still find myself snickering at the Mystery Machine... if for a completely different set of reasons, and I honestly like the Justice League from five years ago. I just find myself wanting to fall asleep during the stuff that comes out today. If I don't like an anime, I stop downloading it or watching it, I don't continue just because someone told me 'it is awesome'.
I like anime that pays attention to the details, like Utawarerumono and Hunter X Hunter. I also like anime that honestly tries to do something unique with what seems like everyday situations without putting something cliche like an amnesiac or a terrible fatal disease into the story (Azu Mangah Daioh and Lucky Star - I never thought I'd see an anime that was like a high school girls' version of Seinfeld before these).
I also like anime that makes fun of anime conventions like Excel Saga and Hayate no Gotoku, because it does help you realize when you are taking it too seriously.
Is there a type of anime I don't like...? Sports and pop idol anime. I loathe both types with an intensity born of my experience with Perfect Blue and a general feeling of pointlessness in watching fictional sports events. I also dislike most organized crime anime on general principle, though I ended up liking Black Lagoon despite myself.
As for Avatar... it had its chance to wow me and failed miserably. Its remarkable resemblance to certain anime (several anime, not just one. Not even Nick would be stupid enough to outright plagiarize) I had seen years before along with the obvious slant toward child watchers made me fall asleep during the thirteenth episode, whereupon I returned my friend's DVD's and thanked him for trying. To tell you how unusual this is... its the first time I ever fell asleep watching something. I wasn't even tired...

To tell you how unusual this is... its the first time I ever fell asleep watching something. I wasn't even tired... yeah...sports and idol ones are the worst. i dont see how you classify avatar as for children? shows like pokemon are classified for children most obviously, because you can tell a childs show based on how much random crap they put it in that they can market, like all the pokemon, beyblades, yugioh, so on, avatar has an actual story to it, which follow the books very well i might add. coming from a fine artist major, i personally like what the americans are doing with anime. some people forget that anime doesnt mean that its just for the japs, its a style of cartoon. the new naruto game for the 360 is a really good example, since it was made by a canadian company, and had nothing to do with the original creators or japanese, they managed to make it alot better then any of the japanese games. (not talking so much graphics but the anime cut scenes they made) uhmmmmm what else, i dunno when i watch an anime, no matter how good the story is, its the actual animation type that will get me to keep watching past the first episode or not. things like hellsing, trigun uhm, samurai champloo, i cant watch past the first few episdoes because the animation is so slow and terrible, like they are trying way to hard for realism. it is after all, a cartoon. im more into the styles like they use in naruto, full metal alchemist, uhmmmmm bleach off the top of my head, i unno if u know what i mean, but yeah they still have their cartoon essence kinda thing, not trying to cover up a shitty made story with over drawn things. u8hmmmmmm, im trying to write something crazy long like you did. haha. why do you think the battles are endless in shippuuden? the arc they just finished, the battles were too short i found i also like the new style they made, which is like a mix of anime with american comics, like that lunatics cartoon...and the new transformers series they are working on. i dont like how they are using it to remake old classics, but they style is awsome. alot of jap are starting to work with that style trying to develop an original series out of it...if they do that might be pretty cool. theirs an anime series i dont remember what its called, its old. some guy would get splashed by water and turn into a girl, and some other person turned into a pig or something....im sure u know which one it is being a uberfan. but what do u think of that one? (yessssss i think its pretty long...if u include the quote haha)

The series you are looking for is Ranma. It looks like you are a visualist when it comes to anime... not that that is a bad thing, it just means that your interests are almost completely different from mine, though you would likely like some of the same ones that I do. I live for the emotional roller coaster...lol
I'm a generalist, in that when I watch an anime, I don't look for the bad points right away, but rather look for the good ones. Once I watch an anime once, I replay them in my head and treat them to my 'drill sergeant' vision. Any anime I've ever watched, I can name at least three points of potential annoyance or unnecessary repetition. (ie. Gundam Wing's tendency to repeat the same battle animations over and over like Battlestar Galactica, putting two whole recap episodes in the middle of the series, and how the Treize faction couldn't seem to figure out that a Leo rifle wasn't going to do shit to a Virgo... I love the series to death by the way).
I'm a born critic with the annoying problem of not being able to lie to myself, so my blind enthusiasm generally lasts all of five minutes. That being said, my most common complaint about anime is the inconclusive endings, the complaint I think is at the tip of every fan's tongue... for god's sake if you are gong to end it, end it! Don't try to set it up for a second season when there is no chance it will happen! *raves for a few more minutes*
PS. I really recommend Clannad... it has had me breaking down in soda-spraying-out-of-nose laughter at least once every episode and nearly makes me break out and cry every other. Of course... my sense of humor is almost identical to the main character's so that may be why I like it so much. The way he screws with people...lol

I'm in between with animation and the story. If one can compinsate for the other then I'll keep watching. I do however like Animes that try to push realism in the show. Hellsing had its own style which I have seen very infrequint in most animes. I like it, but its basis is on hard edges and because of that they put more time into the animation and not the storyline. *raves about keyboard F ups* anyways I didn't like narutos style as much. If youk at styhe creator was going to go with I fine that one visually pleasing but with way the storyline setup he made the right choice in styles. I'm with others that I havalked to about Anime most aniargeic andnoinvisse nor any reala them. I may l anime but there is sti lot cdo with it that mo aren't doing. eemt they are ciusn making tones of shows than taking care in the shows they do make. Thats why i like Hayao Miyazaki. What ever he does he takes care and puts detail into it make this realistic and still have the anime feel to it. I personally am starting to drift away froman animatifor the souleason of th trying to massproduce shows but not putreo them. even the best of storylines can fall if the animation doesn't hold it up. CRAPPY KEYBOARD... to be continued...stupid keyboard

when is the new transformers on? I've seen previews a few times but nvr caught when it was suppose to be on. I'll give it a go, but I still remember the original transformers series so most don't compair. Voltron, thunder cats, the herculoids things like that I still remember and I would get them once I get enough money lol. I like the clasic 80's stuff. relecs? I think not! Tom and Jerry (the old ones) are still one of my top favorite animations of all time and I think always will be. The oldies led the way and in my mind have something the new stuff lacks.

Communist! No one likes the dubbed fillers, hell no one likes filler episodes in general. go forth and find new mindless crap to watch. theres a new gundam series that i like called Gundam 00. the first season just ended and now I'm waiting for the second to start up. Then there is the new series Blue Dragon on carton network put out by the same animators as DBZ, but its more kiddish, has a dragon ball feel to it. the main char is a dope tho. Sorry guys, i'll admit it. I'm an Anime junky I guess. there is more to life than anime and games, just those are the things i fall back on to relax for a while
