So I promised everyone an announcement. I've been promising everyone a lot for so long, I'm surprised you guys even still trust me. But, I appreciate the faith, it's been a rough couple of years. So disregarding what's gone on in the past, here's what the future holds.
NinjaWars 2 will be released as an open beta early next year. We were planning on January, but we had a disk failure on the development server and lost about a month's worth of progress. We're spending the time and money it will take for a professional disk recovery, but it will take a good amount of both.
As an open beta, NinjaWars 2 will not be complete. The game will only be released with fighter archetype playable, spy and assassin will be unavailble. Most of the artwork will be missing. Some of the world maps will incomplete. Most of the clan features that involve voting and clan hall management will be missing. The casino will not have all of its games. Many of the skills and items will be unavailable.
So, I know this sounds like a bad thing, so here's what will be present in the open beta.
The fighter archetype. Some skills based on leveling. Some items. Several towns, with a lot of separate areas, including an entire navigation system to explore the world. A new chat and mail system. Professions (fishermen and the like). Clans. A new wiki for documentation. A new server with more bandwidth. More than 1 casino game. Back story. A new combat system with defensive strategy and offensive tactics. NPCs. A completely dynamic interface with movable, groupable, dockable, and closable "windows".
So, basically, early in 2007. sometime in Feburary, we will be releasing an open beta of NinjaWars 2. NinjaWars 1 will still be live and you can still play it. The beta version of NW2 will open to anyone, and will be developed actively. Throughout the year we will be adding the missing features to the game, and then in January of 2008 we plan on relaunching the game in a final state, restarting the backstory, marketing it, and maybe we'll even throw a party in Philly or NYC. At that point, NW2 will probably look quite different from its initial beta release as it will have been developed taking almost a year's worth of player considerations into account. The game will run for about 4 years of plotline.
I would like to thank all of you players for all of the support you have given to me personally and to the development team as a whole. Without you all, we wouldn't still be developing this game, and as we develop NW2, we think constantly about what the right thing to do is based on you all. The development team would especially like to thank those active on the forums and on the wiki for helping to build up a community we didn't think we'd have until years later. We are humbled and inspired by your support, enthusiasm, and feedback. We hope that 2008 will finally bring a game you've been waiting to play for far too long now, and we hope you will truly enjoy our efforts for you.
Feel free to use this thread to ask questions about any part of this announcement.
