A real univeristy or college is very different from a business in my experience.

unfortunately in my experience my college-Algonquin is a Buisness. They did not even want to see my highschool transcript, proof of address, age nothin, just wanted a credit card number. They both provide a service for a fee, buisness.

they're always the same
certain businesses - usually the ones that make the most money (minus the walmarts) are selective about their clientele, yet they still exist solely for profit
colleges sell a product (status) and in return, those with status reinforce their status with donations to their colleges

well in my case if my college was there solely for the purpose of education, i am sure they would want some inkling into my prior education, they did not even asses me. Literally when i asked them if they wanted my highschool transcript the lady said no, just credit card if you want to sign up over the phone. Then when I was getting exempted from a photoshop class they wanted me to again pay for a test to prove i Knew the stuff, then once proven took days on the phone to have the credit applied to my next course(which i almost didn't get signed up for). all they are concerned about in my case is the financing. My college is somewhat notorious for this reputation. If someone has a different story it would be encouraging to hear.

Oh yeah, my college was totally different. If you deal with the registrar, or financial aid, or the bursar, of course it's about money, but when you're talking to professors, department heads, and what not, it's all about rapport with the professors and staff. It's similar to business, I'll agree with that, but what a business is looking for in you and what a school is looking for in you is quite different.

what IS a university looking in you anyways?... all i can think of is prestige... but dont businesses also look for that....? for that matter...isnt a business also concerned with financing? (not just universities... like in murms case) what other similarities/differences do any of you find? (except for the obvious money lust)

A University gives people partial and full scholarships to go there. Some will even send you a check in the mail. Not to mention that the financial part of it is handled by the "business" end, whereas the educational and service part is handled by professors, coaches, club leaders, music groups, and often times the students themselves.
Best I heard of a business doing something like scholarships is for paying for education increase, or putting up room and board when you travel. Universites will give you 4 years of freedom and growth. Hm.

I was looking at the subject from my own point of view and neglected to see it from your stand point. I guess I can see now on SOME cases where the professors and teaching staff go out of their way to provide above and beyond services, then again this could all be factored down to the individual and their own personal obligation to provide the best service they can. Who in most cases I would imagine would be sought out by the most prestigous institutes. O.K. dude sorry I'm signing off on this one. I'll be interested to see how this turns out but I'm gonna keep spiraling if I continue in this didcussion.
