WIthout community building, multi-player RPGs offer very little over traditional RPGs. Action games where players pit their skills against one another don't need community, though some have them. But an RPG really needs players to join together under common causes, interests, and principles, and to share their ideas with others, whether through conflict or compromise.
So with that in mind, I would like to hear some suggestions from you players about what you think NinjaWars 2 should have in terms of community building tools to help bring players together and make friends and enemies.
Clearly, we need and have clans, groups of players that have a common outward name that make them recognizable as a group. We also have a poor clan messaging system that makes it easy to send clan mail, but not so easy to read it.
So my first suggestion for building personal ties and communities is a better messaging system, both a personal one and clan one.
As an aside, making the chat room better will also keep players communicating more effectively, so a chat room that's faster, and has a list of players currently viewing it would improve the community of the game.
I also heard a suggestion for clan web sites, some kind of profile for the clan. I think a clan profile would be pretty cool. At first, we could just list the players in the clan and put up info about clan rank and what not. There could also be a place for the clan leaders to write up a description of the clan. Eventually, I think we could let players upload their own stylesheets to modify how their clan's profile looked. And of course, for more control, players can build external web sites and link to them from their profile.
What other things do you think would improve the community of the game? What tools would you use as a player, clan member, or clan leader to forge friendships and rivalries that will keep you coming back for more?
