A new situation has presented itself to the NinjaWars community and staff in the form of an ambitious player developing a stand-alone client to play NinjaWars through. Many items are to be considered by the staff and community, in a variety of ways, from advertising to exploiting to security. In this annoucement, I will lay down the law as it pertains to situations similar to these.
Any individual is free to create a product (free or otherwise) that the NinjaWars community may find useful. This is an inalienable right of production, in my opinion. In this specific situation, dtmd is doing nothing wrong by creating this client.
No individual is free to "spam" advertisements of any kind (product, service, clan recruiting, etc) on any official communication medium of NinjaWars (chat board, in-game mail, the forums). Spammers of any kind will be dealt with in a way to prevent further spamming, from simple cease and desist complaints all the way up to active IP banning.
For the specific case of advertising a product, like dtmd's client, a single thread in the General forum is sufficient. Updates about the product can be posted as replies to the same thread, and discussion of the product should be restrained to that thread. For more complex discussion of the product, please use the specific product's forums.
The NinjaWars staff is not involved with any product in anyway until an official announcement is made by a staff member. The extent of our involvement with any product will be clearly defined in these announcements. The NinjaWars staff is in no way endorsing, supporting, or affiliated with dtmd's client, and any posts misreprenting this will be editted or deleted for the sake of the others in the community.
An important note to our players:
Unless you trust the source your are downloading an application from, you should always consider the consequences of installing the application. Any executable that you deliberately install could be monitoring your internet traffic, capturing your passwords and reporting them to someone, preventing you from accessing certain information, or compromising your system's security for further exploits. Virus Scanners will not find most of these problems, because they are targetted at a small subset of the internet community. Most virus scanners work by having a list of known problems. If you download an application that's not on the list, your virus scanner won't find it. Don't think that just because you have security software means you are safe from attacks like these.
Therefore, in light of dtmd coming forward with his client, we will allow him to have one thread about in, in the General forum. We do not support, or condone the use of this client. Do not report bugs about the client in the Bugs forum for the game. We do not ensure, in anyway, that this client is not a security threat. Any communication we have with dtmd does not amount to an endorsement of his product.
It is my sincere hope, that players can feel free to develop and talk about their products in an open and free system, without risk to the members of the community. We will work closely with product developers if we feel that a productive relationship can be built. This is in no way an attempt to stifle creativity, but instead to manage risk. Please feel free to ask questions, this thread will be HEAVILY moderated to be as informative to players as possible.
