OK , so a few months ago we were talking about "wouldnt it be cool if" and the idea of chess or checkers came up. I think it would be a brilliant idea to allow ninjas to play head 2 head games like chess or checkers. We could bet money, scrolls, etc on it...even without the betting, the sheer pride itself would be well worth the battle. What do you ninjas think? Beagle/Tchal : would it even be possible/practical?

Man, I suck at chess. Joined the chess club god knows in what grade and got pissed off that I had to play by a book. On the idea, I have no thought whatsoever since I'm not that fond of either game.

I dont know how many have seen chess games or not, but to build chess is fairly complicated. It's a game within a game. I'm not trying to knock your suggestion, but to implement this in a web browser would be really long and really tedious.
Building a java applet would be a little more reasonable, but still chess is a complex game. Even if we had it so that 2 players had to play each other, we would need to enforce all t he rules and probably automate at least some of the play (streamlined for those who don't know how, tutorials, easy challenges, etc)
It's a lot of work. Depending on how good we make our mini chess game, we could spend just as much time building that alone as on NW2 itself. Checkers is a similar situation.
In NW2 there will be certain features like gambling, and we'll see if we can't come up with something suitable for a mini game.

Here's the only way that I consider the chess/checkers thing to be possible:
We'd have links to a pre-established site online that supports some kind of exclusive group-access. So people could go from NW to there and play other ninjawars players if they wanted. Maybe we could even display the scores from that site somewhere, but in the end the actual game (and the coding of it) would be hosted elsewhere.
But then, these games have been around for millenia and on the internet for netllenia, so there wouldn't be any new ground for us to break with them anyway.
Besides, I can rock all of you in chess.

I'll take that challenge Thcalvak.
Anyway, I don't think we have the development resources to really build anything from scratch, but I would be amenable to using some other service for casual games if we can create a closed community for NW players. If anyone knows of something like that, post a link and we'll check it out.

I have failed to meet a chess player that effectively uses the 6 or 7 move Ruy-Lopez opening (or it's subsequent variatons) as well as I do. So count me in. Start building brackets.
Btw, Yahoo has private rooms for chess, but I havent checked it out since I was in college, and battle.net was down, I didnt have EverQuest installed or my PC was the one on the first floor of the Residence Hall. So might be worth a look.
