A time when you could log in ...and there would be thousands of ninja to kill.... and some people actually logged off every now and again and went about their lives... that was sweet... and level 65 was EXTREMELY impressive...

i don't remember that at all... i do remember resets being twice as large, and everyone being so greedy that they would mass kill them and fight over the right to exist for about 8 minutes every 3 hours. i guess if you made that a percentage it'd be pretty small. about 4.4% percent.
of course with the respawns being the size they are one can hardly expect there to be something to do, when one randomly shows up, not bothering to follow the schedule, which sadly includes every ninja who starts playing in the other 95.6% of the times of day that they might stumble on this site. assuming they could get a confirmation code. (this means virtually everyone who checks out nw for the first time will see absolutely nothing of the game)

I remember those times too. Where we could mass-rape 195 pages of ninja and insult anyone when we get the chance. (then laugh like crazy..) Many great ninja left too. The ninjas nowadays call you coward because you suicide.

Yeah, the confirmation codes thing became a major issue, but it's a difficult problem to solve because NW email got blacklisted completely I believe by yahoo and hotmail (I believe our server email was being used as a spam source, not sure what to do to go about preventing that) and I don't really know the hoops to jump through to get us unblacklisted, though I'm trying to get time to make a fix based on whether people are using @yahoo and @hotmail emails as their confirmation emails. *shrugs*
The limiting of speed of attacks is another thing that needs to come in to change how the repop is available as well, of course. I'll probably make some changes to revive frequency as well.

I'm not optimistic at this point. See I have no real solution in mind beyond suggesting that those, who are now dominating this game, simply leave it to be found by new players who might not go out of their way to ruin it. I can not even find it in myself to encourage people (however ineffectually) to take the time to check it out, only to face the disparity between themselves starting out, and the more active ninjas, with near endless supplies of speed scrolls, and many nasty and certainly questionable tricks, who I can now only assume(since it's pretty obvious at this point) are in reality, just a handful of people with multiple accounts, trying way too hard. Why would I bother trying to teach other people to play now? All we see are multis and people who lose interest within moments of logging on.

Well, you're right, we shouldn't/don't want to continue the way we are now, and part of the reason that it's such a pain for newbies is because A: There aren't any live targets. and B: Any non-newbies logged on instantly consider the newbies useful targets and attack them, not because they're trying to grief them, but because there isn't anyone else.
But I can change the game easier than I can change human behavior, so I think that the answer is to A: create more targets, and B: limit any excessive speed at which people can take out the existing targets. In other words, make the revive cycle happen more frequently, and slow spreeing.
I think that the combination of those two things should make the game a little more manageable than it is currently.

You also may want to check out any email attached to godaddy.com , I run 90% of my email through them these days, and I didn't get a single confirmation code. i think you should consider making a scroll(or other item) that destroys half (rounded down) of a randomly chosen item the victim has. you should also sell it in the shop, probably priced slightly higher than speed scroll. and basically the more active ninja can use it on each other and become less god like. of course in a sense this is probably a really bad idea, but it'd work. fact is that any 2 ninja with a few levels between them can merely trade bounties as they spree and net more speed scrolls then what they need to keep doing it which in turn allows them generate near infinite items. and for any of the ninja who have been doing this, and have 1000s of speeds, will have to watch who they pick on, and each other more closely. especially when they sit there in plain sight farming gold, and someone could hit them with like 6 of this item. ooooorr! you could just snake their bounties take the gold for yourself take in new ninjas and give them the inventory and build an empire, and never pay those gold farmers for a dam thang
